The Beginning of the Gospel
A Reflection from Pastor Travis Young – Frontier Church
This past Sunday, we launched a brand-new series at Frontier Church called “Jesus on the Move: The Gospel of Mark.” Over the next 12 weeks, we’ll be walking through this fast-paced Gospel to see Jesus clearly—who He is, what He came to do, and what it means to follow Him.
Mark wastes no time. He opens with this bold statement: “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1). No genealogy. No birth narrative. No warm-up. Just the announcement: The King has arrived.
The gospel is not good advice. It’s not self-help. It’s not about “trying harder.” The gospel is good news—news that God has acted decisively in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has done what we could never do for ourselves: He has dealt with our sin, reconciled us to God, and brought His kingdom near.
In Mark 1:9–11, we saw Jesus step into history with power and purpose at His baptism. He wasn’t baptized because He needed cleansing—He is sinless. Instead, He identified fully with us. As He came up out of the water, heaven was torn open, the Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father declared: “You are my beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.”
Before Jesus ever performed a miracle or preached a sermon, His Father affirmed Him. Identity precedes ministry. That truth is just as important for us today. We don’t work for God’s approval—we work from it. Because of Jesus, we are beloved sons and daughters of the Most High God.
Mark also reminds us that following Jesus is not about comfort or status, but about sacrifice, service, and sometimes suffering. Jesus Himself said His ultimate “baptism” was the cross. He stepped into death so that we could step into life.
And then comes His call in Mark 1:15: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” This is not an invitation to delay. It’s a summons to respond. Eternity is at stake.
At Frontier Church, this moment feels like the beginning of something new as well. Just as Mark 1 marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, we believe God is writing a new chapter here on the west side of Fort Worth. Our mission is simple: We are people becoming kingdom servants, sent on mission to advance the gospel into new frontiers.
The question is simple: Will we stay where we are, or will we get up and follow the Servant King on the move?
This is just the beginning.
